The
Tiger Trust was established in 1989 in order to further the mission of Nature
Conservation, Tiger Conservation in particular. Tiger Conservation and the crusade
to save the Tiger are our premier activities. We have got two important field
stations, named 'Kailash Sankhala Conservation Centers' at Bandhavgarh and Kanha
National Parks. This is to intensity of our efforts to save the Tiger and its Natural
Habitat.
Tiger Trust was founded by Late Padmashri Mr. Kailash Sankhala, who was the
Founder Director of Project Tiger, Government of India. He was known as 'The
Tiger Man of India'. In fact, he spearheaded the mission of Tiger Conservation
in the country. He wrote many books, some of them on Tigers. He was well respected
and honoured for his work. The Government of India has instituted the National
Fellowship for Research on Wildlife in recognition of his works. The State Award
for Wildlife Conservation by the Rajasthan Government is also dedicated to Mr.
Kailash Sankhala.
Following his footsteps, his son Late Mr. Pradeep Sankhala furthered the cause
of Tiger Trust. He comes from the famous Sankhala family who has got a long
history in Tiger conservation. Mr. Sankhala strengthened the mission of Tiger
Trust by spreading its message not only in India but in abroad too. His innovation
and hard work paid dividend as wildlife activists, amateur enthusiasts, tourists
and even youngsters got involved in the mission of saving the Indian Tiger.
He left for his heavenly abode when he met with an accident in the lap of the
Nature in Canada while touring there to garner support for the cause of conservation
of the Indian Tiger.
Ms. Anjana Gosain, a long-time volunteer and legal backbone of Tiger Trust,
spearheaded the mission of the organization after the demise of Mr. Pradeep
Sankhala. Ms. Gosain has been a wildlife enthusiast since her student days.
She is a senior lawyer with more than 25 years of standing in New Delhi. She
took the crusade forward by emphasizing the three-pronged strategy of involving
the local community in nature conservation, acting as a catalyst between the
neighbourhood communities and the government agencies, and going for stringent
punishment for the habitual offenders in order to save the endangered Tiger.
Anjana Gosain has been appointed by the Honble Supreme Court of India
as an observer in Ranthambhor National Park as a member of Standing Committee.
She is also a visiting faculty with premier institutions and colleges under
Ministry of Environment and Forest. This is in addition to her crusade for
the local community services. She is also a member of several Eco-Tourism
Committees as well.
Principal Trustee of Tiger Trust :
Ms.
Anjana Gosain
Ms. Anjana Gosain has been a wildlife enthusiast since her student days. Eventually,
she took to practicing law. Now, she has got a legal practice of 25 years
of standing to her credit, which includes her activism related to nature conservation.
As for the Tiger Trust, she has been conducting legal awareness programmes
for the personnel from the Department of Forests in different states in India,
as well as in various national level programmes personally. She has been monitoring
and pursuing numerous cases related to wildlife offences, particularly those
related to the Tigers. Her recent endevours include the efforts in getting
the existing Wildlife (Protection) Act amended in India. She feels that there
is a lot of scope for improvement in the existing Act and there is an urgency
to make it simplified as well as more stringent on a war footing in order
to save the Tigers.
Ms. Gosain has got this opinion that acting as a bridge between the locals
and the government is one of the major tasks of the conservation organizations.
Besides, the non-government organizations like Tiger Trust has an important
role to play, that is acting as a complementary and supporting catalyst in
the said responsibility.
This 51-year-old New Delhi-based lawyer and activist has dedicated her life
to the cause of the saving the Tiger as well as conserving its natural habitat.
Mr. Amit Sankhala
Mr. Amit Sankhala, trustee Tiger Trust, is grandson of Padmashri Late Mr.
Kailash Sankhala and son of Late Mr. Pradeep Sankhala. He has vowed to continue
the legacy of the Sankhala family by carrying forward the mission of nature
conservation. This young tiger-lover and wildlife enthusiast has been putting
in new ideas and zeal in to the organization, which includes spreading awareness
and mustering support for the survival of the Tiger.
From
the desk of The Honorary Secretary, Tiger Trust
India
Dear Nature Lovers,
Can you imagine a world without tigers? I know I can't. Since time immemorial
these magnificent creatures have fascinated people all over the world.
They have been woven into myths, legends, stories and coexisted with our
lives. Alas, these most magnificent creatures have recently been at the
brink of extinction! Thanks to unhindered poaching and destruction of
their natural habitat, by none other than Human Being.
Not
only is tiger a magnificent animal but it is also the indicator of the
health of the eco-system. Saving the tiger means we save the eco-system.
If we make sure tigers survive, we have to make sure that its prey base
also lives. To make sure that these herbivores live, we must make sure
that the flora and fauna are protected. Tiger is at the apex of the food
chain in the eco-system. In this way, the whole forest gets saved!
Forests help us to get rain and restore groundwater, besides protecting
the soils. In this way we also protect our rivers and recharge groundwater
sources. By destroying the tiger's natural home, we not only harm tigers,
but also ourselves. The tiger thus becomes the symbol for the protection
of all species on mother earth. This is why we sometimes call the tiger
a supreme predator, an indicator of our ecosystem's health.
Let us vow to save this beautiful and magnificent member of the Nature.
Together, we can do it!
In the name of Nature Conservation.
Yours Truly,
Anjana Gosain
